SCANDINAVIAN REDWOOD OR WHITEWOOD: The most widely used timber in the UK for years, Scandinavian Redwood and Whitewood grow in the well managed forests of Scandinavia and the coldest parts of Northern Europe. The cold climate ensures slow growth. The growth rings are much closer together than faster growing trees from warmer climates. As a result the timber is heavy and durable with a close grain pattern. The wood is seasoned and kiln dried to achieve the correct moisture content before it is machined. Redwood and Whitewood are so similar in appearance and performance that it is difficult to tell the difference. Both are classified as slightly durable and treatment is required for outside use. The forests of Scandinavia and Northern Europe have been responsibly managed on a sustainable basis for centuries so Scandinavian Redwood or Whitewood is an enviromentally friendly choice.

THICKER CLADDING: A feature of this heavy duty summerhouse is thicker ex 3/4" cladding with a finished thickness of 15mm. The use of thinner cladding with a finished thickness of 12mm is almost universal throughout the industry. These 25% thicker boards are more substantial and longer lasting.

PRESSURE TREATED TIMBER: Pressure treatment is a lifetime preservative treatment. The preservative is forced deep into the timber under pressure in a vacuum and penetrates below the surface. All other treatments apply a coat of stain to the surface of the timber only. With pressure impregnated timber, the chemicals are permanently bonded to the cell structure of the wood at a molecular level. Tanalith E is a widely used water based version so pressure treated wood is often described as tanalised. Pressure treated wood is almost colourless except for a slight green tint caused by the copper content in the preservative, though if you want a coloured finish you can paint over pressure treated or tanalised wood with a suitable wood preservative in any colour. Please note that whilst no further anti-rot treatment is ever needed, the timber is still subject to seasonal variation when exposed to the elements and so will expand and contract as it gets hot/cold, wet/dry, etc. For this reason, the timber may benefit from periodically applying a good quality waxy wood treatment to help ensure the building stays fully watertight all year round.

TONGUED & GROOVED FLOOR - NO MAN MADE BOARDS: The floor features 15mm thick tongued and grooved boards with 2" thick framing. This is stronger and longer lasting than cheaper summerhouses with man made boards used in the floor and roof. Man made boards are often only 7mm thick and do not last as long in damp conditions. Floors made with man made boards are normally too flimsy even for light use. The man made boards commonly used in cheaper summerhouses include chipboard and OSB or oriented strand board. These are often described as a "sheet floor" or a "solid board floor" which is deliberately misleading.

GLASS WINDOWS - NO STYRENE OR PERSPEX: The windows feature horticultural glass as standard. This is more rigid than the plastic glazing used in many cheaper summerhouses, which is often less than 2mm thick. Plastic glazing is far more likely to blow out in winds. It is only used because most outside carriers refuse to carry glass. The plastics commonly used as glazing for cheaper summerhouses include styrene, perspex, polycarbonate and acrylic.

SLATE EFFECT FIBREGLASS ROOF: This attractive and low maintenance fibreglass roof is a practical option for a summerhouse roof. It is stronger and more durable than other options. Because it is cast in one piece there are no leaking joins. Being fibreglass it is impervious to water and it normally requires no maintenance. The mould was created from a genuine slate roof and the fine detail provides an authentic finish.

OCTAGONAL BUILDING SIZES: For ease of reference these octagonal summerhouses are measured as a rectangle. The first dimension listed is the overall width from side to side and the second dimension is the depth from front to back. Sizes are sometimes rounded to the nearest nominal size for ease of reading but the correct external wall sizes are listed alongside the price. These sizes do not include the roof overhang. Many other suppliers quote the overall roof size which is much larger. All sizes are approximate.
